Will trans from a 1995 exp. 4.0l 4x4 interchange with a 1996 or 1997 exp. 4.0 4x4

They will bolt in but the thing you are looking for for is the electrical connector, they must be configured the same. Also, make sure the sensors are in the same place so you don't have extra wiring connectors, or not enough connectors. Also, count the spines on the output shaft so it will be the same for the transferase. If these are the same you should be okay. Ken

The 4 speed automatic transmission (4R55E) in the 1995 would interchange with the 1996. Provided it is the 4.0 OHV engine and not the newer overhead cam engine. A 1997 up to 2000 however would have the 5 speed automatic (5R55E) which will not interchange with the 4 speed because the electronics are different and those electronics also won't The 97-2003 versions from the SOHC engines also will not interchange to make those 5 speeds work in the older truck. Like many of the companies the 94-96 vehicles get interesting because of the required changes for OBDII and how each company implemented those changes along with the vehicle updates that were ready at the time.
