When turning my steering wheel, why does it make a squeak?

Hello and thank you for your time I appreciate your help. I Drive a 1999 BMW 323i Series. When I'm driving and I turn either left or the right why does it make a squeaking sound with the light pop? Thank you I would appreciate your advice have a great day.

Have your front end checked, it could be the tie rods, ball joints, or control arms.

I am in agreement with the assessment made by JohnnyT73.
It has been my experience that the squeaking sound you may be hearing and the sensation of popping are sometimes not from the same source, the clock spring in the steering wheel airbag connection has been known to squeak in an extremely irritating fashion.
