We have a 2006 Volvo XC90, with a 5-cylinder turbo. It started making a high pitched whine when the key is turned on and continues after the car is started. I've located the source to be some knod of small pump directly behind the Driver's side headlight. I could read "PUMPE LP89", I believe. It has several connections on it. Some eletrical and I assume some fluid. Can you identify this item for me from my description and tell me the seriousness and expense of the problem. Everything seems to function properly, but the noise is annoying.

Thx

That pump is the brake vacuum pump that is running. The pump itself could have shorted internally or the vacuum switch that looks like a "Robot" near the air cleaner. Most likely it is the pump itself that has failed. Now if that pump gets too hot it will blow the fuse and if you have the steering rack with the speed assist it shares the same circuit and will make steering very difficult. Take it in to Volvo for proper diagnosing or you can replace the pump yourself. Dont think the pump is expensive. Remove the 2 10mm nuts unplug the connector and the vacuum hose. Transfer the rubber grommets to the new pump and reconnect the hose and connector and install the nuts back again.
Good Luck.
