1997 Volvo S70 car just died on me

Hi looking for some help I have a volvo s70 2.5 tdi which I thought was running ok started car this morning it was minus 6 outside gave it a few heats and started no probs I left engine ticking over for fifteen mins till was thawed out then drove the car for around a mile and it just died on me with an engine light coming on think the light was no 21 to do with fuel or emissions I took off fuel filter and drained thinking maybe water causing and the very cold weather we having latelyhad to get towed back home I have noticed the last few mornings there has been o lot of black smoke coming from exaust but once warmed up has been fine any help or suggestions would be great many thanks joe

Don't know if you checked your timing belt, could have possibly broke if never checked recommend replace time is around 60,000 miles if never checked or replaced could have broke.
