as the car gets older, and not in warranty, what are the major problems I'm looking at and how costly?

This cars are pretty good and will last you a long time as long as you properly maintane your vehicle.

MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DRIVE FAST AND BOTTOM OUT ON A DIP. I HAVE SEEN ENGINES GET DAMAGED FROM AN OIL PAN CRACKING DUE TO IMPACT. ALL THE OIL LEAKS OUT AND SUDDENLY YOU HAVE AN ENGINE PROBLEM. OTHERWISE, THE S40(5 CYL) IS A CAR YOU WANT TO KEEP.
