I bought my wife a 01 s 40 volvo. Everything works but we begin to notice after a month that the car would start only when the icon (car with a x over) it was not blinking. When that icon is blinking the car will not start. I also noticed that the alarm light is blinking also. I think its the start kill being activated but we dont have a remote to arm or disarm the alarm.

What can I do without paying a new car price to repair?

If you do not want to take it back to the dealer then you should look for an independent Volvo repair shop to have the immobolizer system checked. Also do you have another key? If you have more then one key does the problem only happen with that one key? Next time you have the same problem try using the other key and see if it starts up. If it does then you have a bad key.

Do you have the Fob for you car? How many key's do you have? If you don't have a FOB I would first get a couple you can buy them on the internet via Ebay or what ever you feel comfortable with. Without the Fob you can not arm or disarm the system as it was intended. Also check out trademotion. Com they have fobs or you car and owners manual if yours is missing. If you have a digital multi meter we can do a couple if tests and checks to see if the immobilizer system is causing the problem.
