1970 Volkswagen Van Valve cover leaking

My valve cover on one side is leaking oil badly, can I use gasket maker to seal it without effecting the next valve adjustment? Will I be able to get the valve cover off if I do, and if I can't use gasket maker, how do you suggest I solve the issue? Thanks for the info!

The valve cover comes off very easy, just take a large screwdriver in the center of the clip and pulled down, valve cover gaskets are only about $12 for the pair
