VW Polo that stalls

I have a 1991 VW Polo 1.3 that every now and then has a problem with what I am guessing is the automatic choke. I start the car and with a little gas it always starts first time. But as soon as I take my foot off the gas when the choke is on, the engine cuts out and I have to reset the choke by hand. Then the choke flicks open and the same things happens. Every junction or situation that means me taking my foot off the gas and it splutters to a hault. HELP!

I dont see a listing for a 91 VW polo. List make model year and type of engine please.
