We have a 2002 passat with 87k miles. We have the car serviced routinely. Recently, the engine light came on and we took the car to the dealership. They replaced an emission control valve, and while test driving the car, the engine oil light came on. When they checked the oil pan they found metal shavings. They now tell us the enigne is shot. We had changed the oil just 2,000 miles back. We don't understand how the car could run so well one day and the engine be shot the next.
any ideas on how this could have happened? Thanks--larry

Yep. The shop more than likely broke something when replacing the valve. Unfortunately the term "emissions control valve" is vague, as there are several valves that have a direct impact on your emissions control system. Or they simply could have done the work without cleaning off the parts, as any metal or dirt that gets into your combustion chambers or crankcase will have a severe impact on your cars driveability. It sounds like it was something the shop did.. I mean I would be skeptical of the reasoning behind them going straight to checking the oil after you took it back, when they mysteriously found the metal shavings. Doesnt make sense to me. Hope this helps!
