2000 VW passat 92,000 all-wheel drive 6 cyl. Emissions workshop light came on; because we were away from home car continued to be driven a few l hundred miles (without any signs of problems other than the light being on) before being checked by dealer. Dealer states car needs two new catalytic converters ($1300 each!). At least one was replaced under warranty at 52,000 miles after it overheated and caught fire. Does this sound right? What are the signs that cat. Conv. Is not functioning properly? Can any good mechanic make that determination?

Yes a good independent mechanic can help you. There will be codes in the computer that will give a basis to troubleshoot with.
