Passat Wheel Bearing

I have a 2002 VW Passatt, 44K miles, 4 cyl manual transmission.

During an inspection they found grease leaking from my rt axle. I had it replaced. I still had a whirring noise and the a thumping noise when I turned right. I had the rt hub replaced. Whirr is still there. I have been told that my left hub should be replaced. I have hit some real bad holes with my right wheel, so I am not surprised that things are bad on that side, but 44K miles sounds low to replace both hubs. Is it? Also I have had the work done at a gas station much more cheaply compared to dealer, might that have been my error?

It does sound like it could be the l/h bearing. Im not doubting their ability, but if the axle nut isnt tightened to the correct spec, it could over or under tighten the pre-load on the wheel bearing causing premature failure
