VW Jetta 97 2.0 L 150,000mi. I have a manual transmission Jetta that was always a little tough to get into second gear. Two days ago while attempting to accelerate in second gear a grinding noise was heard and the transmission was not grabbing. This continued to get worse in all gears until it was not engaging at all as if it was in neutral but the shifter feels like it is in each gear perfectly. I can now release the clutch completely out without the car stalling and with no engagement. The clutch petal seems to be normal. Is my transmission shot? Thank you for your help.

I had this same problem in my 94 jetta I changed the fluid and it help alot then I had a cluth put in and it did it again so I took to the vw dealership and my shift linkage was turned to a offset position and they fixed it for like 20 bucks and now it works better than it did when I bought the car!

Thanks xgan, but I checked the shift linkage and it seems to be fine. I'm thinking it's something within the transmission that is broken. It is not even engaging in any gear so I cannot even move the car.
