2003 Volkswagen Jetta Trouble Code

2003 Volkswagen Jetta 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a trouble code P2181 that says (eng cooling system) but I find no single explanation for the code.
Have cleared code once and ran car 122 miles before
it came on again. Need to find out how to test system
for fix. Any help would be great. Manual temp guage reads 190 ac on or off never gets above.

Hi Hawthorne,

This is an intermittent problem so the probable cause is poor connections.

Check the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor socket for contamination or loose contacts.

You need to replace the ECT. It is quick and simple.
Cost is about $40 from the dealer BUT, remember to ask them for a couple of the 'key' clips that hold it in. They are cheap plastic and break easily. Also, when you pull out the old one, make sure you get the old washer/O-ring out. Then go to Advance auto and have them clear the code.
