1997 Volkswagen Golf Two Wheel Drive Manual 145000 miles

hello, I just bought this car and it seems to be consuming ridiculously too much petrol. It has consume half a tank (6 gallons) in a maximum of 30 miles! What do you think I should check first?

Start with a full tune up, do a compression check, check the ECU for any unresolved fault codes and check all fuel lines for any signs of leaking, start here.
