1973 Volkswagen Beetle 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I need to remove the dynamo to change bearings.
It wont come out backwards because the fan
backplate jams against the manifold.
How does one remove the dynamo?

I remember replacing a generator and I don't think I removed the manifold. Is the problem that the fan won't clear the shroud? I think maybe you can loosen the shroud from the sheet metal on the cylinders and maybe shift it enough. Maybe if nothing else remove the hood and pull the whole thing straight up.
