Damage to the engine due to the failure of the valvetronic actuator?

The car listed above is a120i. The Valvetronic Actuator was replaced and 4 months later on a long-distance trip the car started sounding like a diesel engine. After trying to restart the car it went into limp mode and the engine light came on. Engine was overheated and a lot of smoke. Managed to get the car to a mechanic for diagnostics 2A67 code. They reset the code and continued the journey (600km). Upon arrival I took the vehicle to BMW dealer, and they had to replace the camshaft profile gasket and valve seal, new valvetronic motor and gasket flange, oil pan was sealed, and profile gasket replaced, vacuum pump replacement and solenoid valve o rings. It was an expensive repair.
My question is, was the damage to the engine due to the failure of the valvetronic actuator?

How does the engine run now? If okay, there was no damage done. The limp mode tells me the throttle actuator probably needs service. Here is a generic guide that will help you see what to do with specific instructions in the diagrams below for your car:
