Upon starting, engine rattles then shuts off.

I had been driving on the highway for about thirty minutes when my car's RPM's started going down. I could not get any gas into it. A warning popped up notifying me to turn off my car's engine. I pulled over and shut it off. I gave it about ten minutes and tried starting it up again. It started, but only for a second or two, then the engine started rattling and shut off. The electrical in my car was still going. I tried a couple more times and got the same result. I had not changed my oil in some time, could this be a factor?

I am hoping someone can give me some advice as to what the problem might be before I go into a shop with it blind.
