Greetings Car Pros-

Whirring/growling noise seems to come from rear-end since 98,000 miles. All fluids changed and were clean. Six shops have looked over last two years, no definitive answer. Each says wheel bearings okay, tires fine, u-joints tight, no leaks. Noise heard at 35 mph, especially uphill. Now 145,000 miles. Noise worse! Latest mechanic called it a "roar." Says will replace pumpkin (differential) for $3,200.00 up front. Not sure it is the differential.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

Is there any change in the noise when making turns? Based on your description, it sounds like a bearing issue. However, which one is the question. Also, it could also be a bad or worn thrust washer. If the fluid is drained, you should see some metal shavings if that is the case.

I have attached an exploded view of the rear differential assembly. My first suspects would be either an axle bearing, an inner case bearing or the pinion bearing (see picture). To be honest, they all are replaceable, and should not cost more than $1,000.00. Parts and labor. When the differential is apart, they will be able to inspect thrust washers. What makes diagnosis more difficult is the fact that you may not be able to feel excessive play in any of them. However, the bearing or race may be worn or damaged causing the noise.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

Dear Joe, thanks for the feedback. Went to new shop today. Put car on hoist with engine running. I could hear noise in each of the back wheels. Their stethoscope told them noise from both wheel assemblies/(bearings) and differential. Said it should cost less than $2,000.00 to fix all. Will get firmer estimate on Monday. That is $1,000.00 less than other shop but other shop knows the car and knows me. Hard to trust these days, ya know?
