Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.
Is there any change in the noise when making turns? Based on your description, it sounds like a bearing issue. However, which one is the question. Also, it could also be a bad or worn thrust washer. If the fluid is drained, you should see some metal shavings if that is the case.
I have attached an exploded view of the rear differential assembly. My first suspects would be either an axle bearing, an inner case bearing or the pinion bearing (see picture). To be honest, they all are replaceable, and should not cost more than $1,000.00. Parts and labor. When the differential is apart, they will be able to inspect thrust washers. What makes diagnosis more difficult is the fact that you may not be able to feel excessive play in any of them. However, the bearing or race may be worn or damaged causing the noise.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.
Take care,
Joe
