I recently replaced the engine in my truck listed above. I swapped everything over from the old engine to the new engine that I could without having to replace it. The engine started up immediately and was timed appropriately based on the 0° before top dead center label on the radiator shroud. The temperature gage never registers more than 160°. Are used a thermometer which says that the temperature is well over 180°. I have trouble starting the engine after it is warm. It also has a small stutter in acceleration when applying the accelerator pedal abruptly. Is this a timing issue or an overheating issue?

Hi,

The idea that the thermostat is off could be the cause. If the coolant sensor is indicating an incorrect temperature, the engine may be running rich on fuel. Is there any gray or black smoke when it starts from the exhaust?

Do me a favor. Let's see if there are any diagnostic trouble codes that may help us. This vehicle has an OBD1 system. All you need to retrieve codes is a short jumper wire or even a paper clip. Follow the directions in the attached link and let me know if any codes are found.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe
