Transmission not going in reverse after battery drained?

Hi, my van shut off while my wife was driving. The battery and brake lights also came on. The belt is there and not broken.
It's at the mechanic now. He said I need an alternator and transmission, there was no problem prior to the battery draining. I put a battery pack on it to release the vehicle into neutral. It was flatbed-ed.
He told my wife it won't go in reverse and didn't elaborate. I get home from being away tomorrow.

Correct me if I'm wrong. If the voltage is too low (bad alternator) You can't make a proper diagnosis. I questioned if the test/his diagnosis was done with a fully charged battery. I got an eye roll.
I'm disabled with an automotive background & just can't do it at this time.
When the battery drains, I understand all solenoids don't operate properly. Can a transmission be hurt by running it till it died due to a bad alternator? Is there a relearn that can be done?
I feel that he is clueless at this point. Trying to avoid towing to another shop.
Although I'm not at the vehicle. I believe put an alternator in fully charge the battery and I should be good to go.

Thanks for your time and help.

Hi Neil, you are correct. Today's vehicles are extremely dependent on the correct voltage being provided to the different solenoids, sensors, switches, and so on.

If there wasn't a problem with the transmission prior to the battery failing (actually it sounds like the alternator) a failing alternator and low voltage didn't damage the transmission. Absolutely, replace the alternator, fully recharge the battery, and see if that takes care of the transmission issue.

Also, if that doesn't take care of it, have the can-bus scanned. I don't know how familiar you are with the controller area network, but basically, the different modules are tied together via a few wires in which they communicate with each other. It requires a scan tool that can read the can-bus. If there are any codes stored, regardless of the module, this should retrieve the codes for you.

Here is a link showing how it is done:

Certainly, as you suggested, we need to make sure the correct voltages are present and available to all components. That needs to be done before anything other.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Thanks Joe. It confirms my theory is correct. Some techs are challenged by knowledge. I told the owner it's called cause and effect. Fingers crossed.

Hi,

No problem whatsoever. I still don't see why they recommended replacing the transmission.

Regardless, let me know how things work out for you. I'm interested in knowing.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Replaced the Alternator. Everything works fine. Thanks for your help. $700 I remember when they were $50.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. I can't believe the cost! Like you, I remember them being 50.00 as well. However, everything is extremely expensive anymore. I need tires for my truck, and it was always under $400.00. Now, the same tires are nearly $800.00. I give up. LOL

Take care of yourself and I hope you told the shop that the transmission is fine. That was a crazy call on their behalf. When you suggested the voltage concern, I had a feeling that would resolve the issue. I'm glad it did.

Also, feel free to come back anytime in the future. You are always welcome here.
