My transmission started acting strange two weeks ago I would say it started when I first did cold start when the transmission was still cool. At first it would not engage into reverse, I would have to sift back into park than into reverse getting it to move. It did that twice so far in two mornings, but not every morning so far.

Than today while I was driving and in drive gear I was accelerating and it felt harsh like the car wasn't even going down the road smooth. It felt like it wasn't moving at first when I stepped on the gas. Then it smoothed out and it drove okay again.

This isn't everyday when shifting to reverse and today just started the problem in drive but eventually smoothed back out again.

I checked the transmission fill level and it was full at hot at idle. But transmission was a bit dirty, but I could still see red, wasn't brown yet, it didn't smell burnt or feel gritty and it felt smooth, didn't find any metal shavings, nothing is leaking underneath.

Do you recommend, dropping the pan to make sure no metal is found and draining with new filter and pan gasket? To have it rebuilt would be unnecessary because it still shifts into gears fine. Could it just be dirty filter?

Transmission was serviced in 2016 at 53,000

Thanks

Good afternoon,

Yes, you need to drop the pan and change the filter and check the magnet at the bottom of the pan. It sounds like the filter is clogged.

What type of transmission oil does it take and how much quarts do my transmission take? Transmission is THM440-t4.

Roy, I am replying to you in this thread again. I did not change my transmission fluid yet or filter. Today the transmission (the first time) made a thump noise when I put it into reverse coming out of the store. When I went home I checked the fluid level and it had bubbles on the dipstick. I could see that it was slightly dirty, but didn’t smell burnt or notice any clutch material in it.

If I am correct a dirty clogged filter could cause hesitation and nosy slipping when shifting into gears while driving correct?
But what about the air bubbles on the dip stick? Is this a common issue with the 440t4 GM trans?

After you answer my two questions, I was thinking about also buying this but I don’t think this would really prevent slipping would it? Thanks.

Yes to both issues. If the filter is clogged it will not allow enough fluid into the front pump and the valves body. It will cause hesitation for engagement and also slipping from low pressure.

The bubbling is from the fluid getting hot. You need to change the fluid and filter.

Would that also prevent further slippage like the loud thump I told you about it made in reverse today?

If the filter is clogged, yes. That is a delayed engagement of the band and clutches.
