Sometimes when I put the car in reverse it idles really rough. I'll put it back in park and then in reverse it will be fine. Most times it idles a little rough when put in to reverse but sometimes it's worse than others.

Hi,

Does it ever act this way when you place it in drive? A rough idle is likely not the transmission but an engine related issue.

Is the check engine light staying on when the engine is running? Also, have you checked the basics? For example, an engine vacuum leak can cause a rough idle. Here is a link that shows how that is done:

Let me know if the light stays on and if you are able to check for leaks.

Take care,
Joe

It has recently been tuned up and I know there was a misfire at one time and no it doesn't do it in drive and there is no check engine light on. The real rough idle only does it when I shift in to reverse and then I'll put it back in park and then back to reverse and the rough idle will be gone.

I wonder if it has to do with an engine or transmission mount. If one is bad, you may be feeling the engine vibrating through the body of the vehicle.

Take a look through these links:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/vibration-noise

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-a-motor-mount-works

First, do a visual inspection to make sure nothing is damaged. Here are the directions (which I don't like) for testing:

Important: Before replacing any engine mount due to suspected fluid loss, verify that the source of the fluid is the engine mount, not the engine or accessories.

1. Install the engine support fixture.
2. Observe the engine mount while raising the engine. Raising the engine removes the weight from the engine mount and creates slight tension on the rubber.
3. Replace the engine mount if the engine mount exhibits any of the following conditions:
- The hard rubber is covered with heat check cracks.
- The rubber is separated from the metal plate of the engine mount.
- The rubber is split through the center of the engine mount.
- The engine mount itself is leaking fluid.

Do this: Have a helper start the engine after you open the hood. Have the helper place the transmission in drive and then reverse. When going into reverse, does the engine lift a bit or does the movement seem excessive? Also, with the helper holding the brake and in reverse, have him/her press lightly on the throttle to see if the engine lifts.

Try that and let me know what you find.

Take care,
Joe

I think I have figured out the problem with the rough idling. I had the coil pack and module replaced. Since I've had that done it hasn't done the rough idling. Still in the trial phase. But I don't have another question. I had the speedometer cluster changed with a brand new one and had the dealership install and program it. But the service vehicle keeps flashing. How do I reset it? The car was completely been serviced about 2 months ago.

Hi,

That will do it. I'm glad to hear you found the issue. I'm really surprised a bad coil wouldn't have set the check engine light. Regardless, I'm glad it's fixed.

As far as the other questions, I need you to copy and paste it to a new thread. We are trying to keep all threads specific to the same topic. I hope you understand. I will watch for it.

We appreciate it.
