Transmission does not go into drive

Transmission works in reverse, low and intermediate but when it shifts into drive it goes into neutral? Also makes a whirring sound like it's low on fluid or there's a pump problem.

It sounds like something let go. To be sure lets drop the pan to see if anything is sitting in it. Here is a video to help you:
