Transmission problem
1993 Toyota Tercel 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I have changed the clutch out on my dad's Toyota Tercel and we have problems. The car is up on jack stands with no tires on at this point. When we start the car in nuetral it fires right up with no problem. We can shift into first with or without the clutch, EXCEPT if we have the brake depressed. If we step on the brake first, and try to start it, BAD noises occur so we abandon that. If we start it and shift into first, then the rotors start to spin, if we step on the brakes, those same bad noises occur.

So it sounds to me like the clutch is not disengaging, but I can peer into the bell housing and see the throw-out bearing depressing the pressure plate fingers. Also there is less than a 1/4 inch more that the lever (fork) can move before bottoming out on the casing.

I put in a new clutch plate, pressure plate and throw-out bearing all from the same kit.

I did notice that the pressure plate previously had about half as many fingers than the new one, but in the past that has just been a manufacture preference issue with no real functional consequences.

So I am at a loss as to what the problem is. I would like to get my hands on an exploded view of all the parts so I can make sure that there is NO chance that the previous owner didn't rig it to work and that there is not a real issue of missing parts.

I will answer my own question since no one has a answer for me?

I put the clutch plate in backwards. Bottom line is I am an idiot. I knew/know how the plate goes in, but in my haste/fatigue I messed it up. So there you have it.

I'm out.
