My Toyota is burning 6 to 8 quarts of oil between oil changes every 3,000 miles. I had it checked for leaks and none were found.

My next step would be an extensive check by the service station.

What could this possibly mean and approx. How much will it cost?

If there are no leaks then it is burning it and you should see blue smoke coming out the exhaust, a lot of blue smoke.
Have a compression test run on each cylinder, could be a broken ring(s) or excessive cylinder wear, or possibly valve seals.
But that is a lot of oil in 3000 miles.
