I pulled into a parking lot and tried to turn off the car, but it just would not quit. I had not noticed anything unusual about the car, other than it was due for an oil change. But anyway when I turned the key to shut off the car, it wouldn't turn off. I tried releasing the clutch to let it shut off the unorthodox way. That didn't work, either. Instead of shutting off, the engine made a strained sound. It was a lot like the sound a car makes when going down a mountain, after it has been put in second gear. I got scared I would really damage the car then, so I just put it in neutral and, eventually, it ran out of power right there in the parking lot. What happened? Why wouldn't it turn off? How could this have been prevented?
