Engine Performance problem
1998 Toyota Corolla Four Wheel Drive Automatic 45000 miles

hi,
i bought toyotal corolla in November2008, its automatic transmission, and engine size is 1.3 petrol, model 1998, 3 doors hatchback, I need to ask about its fuel consumption and its steering, usually its give me 185-195 mile in 30 Litre, its seems to be very low, but I am not sure about it, I ask from some garage they told me its automatic thats y its gives not satisfactory consumption. Can u please tell me how much fuel consumption its need to gives, its japnese manufacturer, when I drive on 70 mph its rpm needle always on 3.5-4 rpm, is it alright or have some problem. Second question about its steering, it is power assisted steering, but its not too much soft as compare to other cars, I cousin have Rover 1998 and its steering is very soft even u can use only one hand to turn, but mine is not soft as it. Please I need yours advice and information about these problems.

Make sure the OD (overdrive) is working. If OD is off, it will run a higher RPM and cause poor gas mileage.

You should feel it shift into 4 gear, then another shift into overdrive.

It should be closer to 3000 rpm at 70.

Check power steering fluid level and inspect for any leaks in pressure and return hoses. If fluid level is good and hoses are not leaking, you may have a problem with rack, or inner/outer tie rods, ball joints, bearings, or possibly CV joints.

Have transmission checked, it should have a TCC (torque convertor clutch) lockup. This will lock the convertor at certain speeds, if malfunctioning, it will cause RPM to rise 300-600 rpm and your mileage will suffer.
