1995 Toyota Corolla car stall and smoke

Car started sputtering then stalled, will start but not for long. Car was smoking, I took air filter out and smoke was coming out of their. Just had spark plugs and wires replaced 5 months ago. Could the fuel filter cause this or the fuel pump problem?

What color was the smoke? Was it just coming from engine area or was it coming out exhaust as well?

Was smoke blue, white, dark grey/blackish? White smoke indicates a coolant leak, grey smoke indicates fuel being burnt through exhaust, and blue smoke is an oil leak.
