1994 Toyota Corolla 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I bought this car 2 weeks ago. It was missing a part of the muffler so I had it replaced. One night it started hesitating and by the time my gf got home the car caught fire.I brought it back to the garage and they told me it was the wires.I changed the wires, cap rotor, plugs and the resinator again heated up.I brought it back and they changed the resinator to a straight pipe. It no longer heats up, but at times it won t go past 20km/hr and later it goes super fast and she has no control of the gas and then it returns but the rpms don t drop. They rev really high. When she gets out of the car she says theres a burning smell. What could it be?

If they haven't removed the convertor, I would suspect it is clogged. You can remove it and inspect the inside, or have shop perform backpressure test.

The first time the car caught fire, they removed the resinator and replaced it with a straight pipe. They inspected the cataletic converter and it had been replaced not long ago and was completely clear
