Does the engine need to come all the way out or can the mounts just be taken off and the engine be raised just enough to get the the water pump? What needs to be disconnected from the engine to pull the engine and any tips for replacing a water pump. 4A-FE Engine.

The problem is the WP pulley (if equipped with PS). The pulley is 2 piece and MUST come out to get water pump off. In order to get the pulley out, remove the right front motor mount and loosen the rest, raise engine enough to get pulley off. You only have to raise engine 3-4 inches.

You also must remove the timing belt, and now is a good time to change it if near 60K. If you reuse it, mark rotation on belt and DO NOT allow it to be contaminated with coolant.
Replace O ring on WP to block connection and replace thermostat (use ONLY a Toyota part, and make sure weep hole in thermostat is at 11:00 when installed).

It is not a hard job, just time consuming.
