Oil leak, engine "shavings"

1996 Camry, 80 K miles, 2.2 l engine. This car had an oil leak so I've had the front & rear seals replaced, plus the oil pan. When the mechanic removed the old oil pan, he said that there were "engine shavings" in it. What could this indicate?

No, he didn't say anything about that. I know very little about this stuff (as you could probably guess from my question), I think he probably thought that I would have freaked out at the thought of any more expense on the car. If it is the rod or bearings, is that crucial? Could it have been from "old" damage? In other words, can I just leave it until I have some more money to pay for more repairs?
Or should I be looking for a different mechanic?

If you have no engine noise it may not be a problem yet and in my opinion I would have said hey this could be a problem lets check it while we have the pan off

sorry

Well, it wasn't making a noise at the time. The mechanic said he couldn't even hear it (he's a bit older) but that the guys in the shop could. Now I think I'm hearing it too. What is involved to fix whatever "it" is? (Like how many megabucks?)

If you can catch it before it does any major damage you may be ok, ive had this happen several time and have polished the crank and just replaced bearings and had no problems, someone really needs to pull the pan and the rod and main caps to have a look to really give a good opinion on it, someone who knows what they are doing

really you just dont know unitl its opened up

Also if you take it back to where the oil pan gasket was done and tell them what was said when you were there about the shavings, I personally would see them having no problems in pulling the pan again free plus parts of course (oil pan gasket) if you need more work done I would think if they are good people they would cut you some slack since they may have made a mistake
