I have a 92 camry 2.2 4cyc (auto) with 160000 miles on it.
when I turn on the a/c in D with my foot on the brake, it seems like it is going to stall. It's more pronounced with the a/c on while in D on when i'm cruising along, it feels like it's losing its power and then it picks up all of a sudden! When the a/c is off, the problem is less evident but still there and the idling is erractic

Sounds like the computer is not receiving the AC signal properly to control the idle air control valve or an idle up solenoid is failing. Due to the load of the engine it is not being compensated. The computer has to trigger one of this to increase the idle. It could be the IACV or Idle up solenoid

For a start try removing the IACV and clean it up and see what happens.

I had the iacv & idle solenoid checked out and they were both fine. I also changed the fuel filter which had a lot of deposits in it but the idling is still erractic when in D & I step on the brake.

Okay investigate the EGR and PCV valves and might want to check the fuel system pressure.

When was the last major tune-up?
