Would a waterpump make a rattling noise? For preventive care I took my car to have a timing belt installed. The mechanic said the noise was coming from the water pump.

More than likley the noise is simply the timing belt making noise from being loose, water pumps would normally last longer as well as the brgs. In order to properly find out simply adjust the slack out of the belt (see manual) but if allready in that area inspect pump and brgs very well.
