2000 Toyota Camry Temp. Gauge moves towards hot on longer t

The temp. Gauge will move towards the red after about 40 minutes of driving. If the A/C is on sometimes the gauge will not increase towards the red. If the car is in neutral the problem seems to get worse. I have checked the coolant level and it seems to be full. I also had the thermostat checked at the mechanic and it is fine. I am a car neophyte and dont know what to do. Please help. Thanks

If you're not actually overheating or boiling over the coolant temperature sensor or the engine temperature gauge switch is misleading you or the gauge itself is out of calibration. Get it checked-
