Running rough and engine shutting off on start

Four cylinder front wheel drive automatic 145,000 miles.

My car was running rough suddenly a few days ago and I decided to change the spark plugs. After changing the plugs it ran slightly better so I decided to go ahead and change the spark plug wires. I should mention that there was oil in one cylinder which was the case two years ago. After changing the wires the engine misfired terribly to the point that it stops now. At times the engine will not even start. I have heard a popping sound on occasion when starting the engine.
I appreciate your help. I should also mention that when this occurred two years ago changing the wires/plugs erased the problem.

From the symptom description, I would suspect either the spark plug wires were incorrectly installed or the ignition coil is faulty or wire harness is loose. Recheck those and see if you can find anything out of place.

If plug wires are correctly installed, check if sparks are bright when cranking.

If I am correct on the 1999 Camry four cylinder the longest spark plug wire's end goes to the closest connection to the front of the car and the other follow to the back. Am I correct?

Also, where is the ignition coil? I appreciate your help.

1999 TOYOTA CAMRY

Car specs: 199 Toyota Camry LE 4 cyl 2.2 L, 101K miles. The problem is after car has been running for about 20-30 minutes the car stalls out completely ( usually on the highway which makes it a dangerous problem ) with the check engine light coming on. When you try to start the car back up it starts but dies instantly unless you keep your foot on the gas. Once you let the car sit for an hour or two the car starts normally and idles fine without having to keep your foot on the gas. About 12-18 hours after non use the check engine light goes back off and the car appears to run fine until the next incident. Only common factors that ocurr when the problem starts happening is that it is at night so it is colder than normal and the heat is on and sometimes on the highest setting. Took it to a mechanic who ran codes and was sure the ignition coil was bad ; replaced this. Problem still reocurrs, not sure if somthing is killing the igition coil or if my mechanic is just misdiagnosing the problem. Not happy with the mechanic since I'm 236 bucks into this with no resolution of the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :Cry:
