Engine problem
1998 Toyota Camry 4 cyl 55000 miles

I have a 1998 Camry with about 55,000 miles on it. I had a new water pump installed in 2004. 18 months later the water pump leaked and was found to be defective. Another was installed. The vehicle is being serviced by a different service mechanic now and replacement for the devetive pump has now been replaced. The 3rd replacement is now leaking after 2 weeks and will be taken back to the service mechinic to look at. Disregarding the defective pump, what would cause these water pumps to continually fail or is there something else that is the issue?

Hi there,

The only other thing that could be an issue is if the mechanic is trying to over tighten the belt, as these are driven by the timing belt and they have a pre set tension I would not expect a qualified person to do this, Check if the water pumps are genuine or after market, as there are some cheap rubbish out there being fitted.
