I was driving down the highway one day and the car all of a sudden started clanking and poped and then smoke started coming out from the hood. The oil light came on and the cars performance droped to next to nothing. I checked under the hood and noticed oil had splatered everywhere. The repair shop says it needs a new engine all together! Does that sound accurate and also if so how much would the total cost be with labor and parts? Even better, is there a website that offers an estimate for this job that breaks everything down?

It seems like your car's engine threw a connector rod or something to that effect, and therefore has been totally internally destroyed. In such a case, you really do need another engine (a new one or a good used one from a salvageyard) because rebuilding the destroyed one would cost more than $4000 (due to labor). If I were you I would put in a good used engine or if you can't find one, just junk the car. Not worth fixing it up.
