2004 Toyota 4Runner Cargo door will not open

My 2004 4Runner cargo door wont open. I can hear the solenoid activates but the door wont open. The window opens and shuts and I havent got anything into the assembly.

I have similar symtoms on my 1998 4Runner.

I found my problem to be mechanical. The workaround:

Press inward FIRMLY on the bottom of the licence plate holder (i.E. Vertically the space between the cargo handle and where the cargo door latch actually is) with your left palm while engaging the handle with your right hand.

This engages the latch and opens the door. Oddly enough, it works for me. Maybe it'll work for you.

I have a 1997 4Runner and my cargo door was also giving me trouble. The solution offered (pressing in on it while opening) is exactly what I did for over a year until that stopped working. Then I replaced the latch mechanism with a OEM part that cost about $150 form a Toyota dealer. It works fine now. I wish I had replaced it sooner!
