2000 Toyota 4Runner Car Jerking

My 4Runner had been running just fine then all of a sudden while driving on the interstate the car started to shake and the check engine light came on. I stipped for a few minutes then tried again and I could feel the trans slipping. What causes this sudden problem? What needs to be fixed and can you give me a range of how much it would cost to repair?
