I have a 1988 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 4WD with a manual transmission. The engine will not start. When I turn the key, all that happens is a click. I have replaced the battery recently, so I believe that it is the starter. Should I just replace the starter, or could this problem be caused by something different?

Hi ssnow,

Thank you for the donation.

There are 2 things that you can do to test if it is the starter.

1. Give the starter some jolts but tapping it with a hammer and retry starting. If it works, the starter is due for replacement. If it does not work, proceed with next step.

2. Disconnect the starter solenoid wire, attach a remote wire and apply battery vlotage to it, if the starter does not crank, it is bad and needs to be replaced. If it works, you need to test the power from the igniton switch for cranking, could be a faulty relay.
