Engine shaking

Car ran strong for three months, then trouble started. Car was shaking terrible, took to mechanic five times. Each time he would replace one spark plug at a time. It would run fine for a week, then again shaking and unable to gain speed without flooring it.
Insisted on replacing coil pack as well as six new plugs. Again, ran a week then the same problem.
Now new mechanic is telling me he thinks it might be the timing chain jumped. I did smell gas when turning car on in addition to above lack of acceleration and shaking. Check engine light would flash while I struggled to drive home. I know there is no guarantee but mechanic says we may need a new engine, he will not know what is what until he sees the timing chain. I need some advice.

Hello,

I would start by doing an compression test which will confirm the timing chain or if have low compression in one or more cylinder. A timing chain cannot come and go like you have described. A spark plug fouling is telling us something else.

Here is a guide to help you confirm the problem:

Please let us know what you find.

Thank you Ken, the latest news I got from mechanic was that after charging battery etc, that the computer is giving no codes on diagnosis machine. The car starts up but as previous stated it sounds horrible and slow. Will do as you recommended. He was trying to tell me he would spend four to five hours to get to timing chain. He thought might have jumped and who knows what then maybe a new rebuilt engine. I did change sparks and coils and do know that many parts can be substandard. Oh yeah, a few times the dashboard cluster lights disappeared on me, then re-appeared later. Sign of a possessed car?

Before you go to all that trouble I would loosen the exhaust system from the manifolds to see if you have a plugged exhaust system.

Here is a guide to help you:

Worth a try i say.

Please let us know what happens.
