Thermostat replacement

The other day, while driving, got hot, gauge to top, stopped, it cooled and was able to get home. Thinking thermostat. Is there way to visually check and if need replacing?
can I just replace thermostat (housing looks good)? Checked some auto parts stores, can only get full kit for around $50.00. If can only replace thermostat, what type some I have seen online do not exactly match up to what is there.
