Tachometer goes up at times

I can be driving down the road and all of a sudden my car acts like it is going into neutral the tachometer will go up. I have released my foot off the gas and then kind of catches itself and goes back into normal acceleration.

That sounds like transmission slip from worn parts. When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed? I would try a filter and fluid change first, however if it has not been serviced regularly it may be that will do nothing and a rebuild is in order.
