Got an oil change at Meineke the other day for my car listed above. Instead of 5w30 conventional oil, they put a synthetic blend in my car and charged me twice the price. Obviously they didn't want to hear my complaint. The next day, my "service engine soon" light came on. Any chance the wrong oil in my car caused this? Can I leave the synthetic oil in the car or should I have it drained and filled with 5w30? Thank you.

Good afternoon,

No, it will not cause the light to come on at all.

You need to have the code read at a parts store. Once I know the code, we can help track down the area of failure.

I had an oil change done at Meineke muffler. To my surprise it cost $71.00 and when I questioned the price, they said they used synthetic oil, despite knowing it took 7.5 quarts of 5w30 conventional oil. I complained so they took $10.00 off. Ironically, the next day "my service engine soon" light came on and has not gone off. Could this have anything to do with the synthetic oil in my engine and should I have it drained and the correct oil put in? Thank you.

I asked this question earlier today and I got a response in spam, but it would not open sorry.

I doubt this would cause the engine light to come on as you don't have what are called cam shaft phasers which are sensitive to the types of oil. I would start with checking for codes and that will tell us what the issue is. As long as they used the same weight oil then it will not effect the engine as the only difference is synthetic oil is altered by the oil companies for maximum protection, versus conventional oil where they just add some things to increase the basic protection. In other words, synthetic lasts longer and so they can charge more.

Let's just check the codes and go from there but I am not sure I would have the oil drained as I doubt it would cause this but let's check the code and go from there.
