Why is this diesel engine cranking but not starting?

Hi, one morning my diesel car was cranking without starting. Before this, no problems at all. I tried spraying starter fluid into the air intake, and it briefly starts, so it is a fuel supply problem. I have replaced the mechanical high pressure fuel pump, and it is still cranking but no start.

I was thinking it might be that there is air in the fuel system. Haynes manual said that you don't need to bleed, but I must have cranked it about 20 times (10 second bursts) without result.

How long is it normal to have to crank a diesel car that has effectively run out of fuel?

Thanks very much,

Hi,

If it did start briefly using starting fluid, yes, the issue is fuel related.

The idea that the pumps are new leaves me to think it is air. Do me a favor. Try this and let me know if it makes a difference:

1) Turn the key from off to the run position and count to 5.

2) Turn the key off and repeat step 1 a total of 5 times.

3) On the 6th time, see if it starts.

Let me know. Also, if you haven't tried starting fluid since the new parts were installed, try that as well.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thank you for your message.

After charging the battery overnight, I tried your suggestion, but it did not work - still just cranking.

I have tried the starter fluid since installing the new pump, and the engine does briefly start then.

I tried carefully loosening the nuts on the injectors, and fuel was leaking out, so the fuel is getting up there, but maybe with air in the system the pressure will not go high enough?

One other thing, there is a flashing yellow light on the dash: a car with a spanner over it. I could not get any fault codes using a phone app connected to the OBD port.

I'm starting to run out of ideas!

Many thanks.

Hi,

Have you confirmed the fuel pressure is within the manufacturer's specifications? I realize what has been done, but the pressure could be too low.

Also, I'm sorry I don't have the specs for the vehicle, but because it isn't offered in the US, it's not in any of my manuals.

You could try checking to see if there is air in the system.

Let me know.

Joe
