Replacing the start, how do separate rate the starter from the engine (it is stuck)?

The starter wouldn't work. Banged on it (old school). It worked but didn't the next time. I took all proper steps to remove it but it won't separate from the engine. Someone told me the Bendix gear might be stuck. Thought I might be able to manually rotate motor to maybe free it if it "is" stuck on the flywheel, but I don't quite see how I can do that. Camshaft pulley nut very difficult to get to.

I would hammer and contact the body of the starter, it is just stuck, it will come out. Here is a generic guide to help you step by step with instructions in the diagrams below to show you how on your car. Make sure you have all three mounting bolts out.
