Car is at a certified Chevrolet shop. They are telling me that the starter bolts backed out & one of them cracked the block. By the way what is the starter attached to the bell housing or the block? I can not seem to be able to find out which. I am going to be lost when I go there this morning and just hoping that you can school me on this situation. Something about this doesn't sound right to me.

If the bolts worked loose it is very possible that it could have cracked the block. It isn't very thick in the area that it bolts on and if it got a bit crooked while cranking the engine it's possible.
BUT, depending on where the crack is and how bad it is you might be able to make a repair that would hold. You would replace the starter bolts with longer studs that can screw into the hopefully undamaged threads deeper in the block. Then use those to secure the starter. Perhaps add some loctite to keep them from getting loose.
This depends on how bad the damage is though.
