Truck will go into reverse and go. Put it in drive and sometimes it will go and sometimes it will not. Someone said the torque converter was acting up before because it would jerk but that stopped two weeks before it broke down.

To me it sounds like you are low on fluid. Here is a guide to help you check the fluid with diagrams below for how it will be for your car:
