I just got my vehicle (listed above) and the shifter won't go into park gear fully. I just changed the shifter cable and had my ignition checked.

The most common cause of a vehicle not going into park fully is the cable is out of adjustment.

I am attaching the process below for this, but can you get a picture of what you are seeing with this and that will help confirm this is the issue.

Please see the info below about adjusting the shifter cable.

Also, was this an issue prior to replacing the cable or did this just occur after replacing it?

Let's start with this and we can go from there.

Thanks

My dad got under the vehicle and it's going into park fully. It's just not letting me remove my key. It will give it back randomly. When it doesn't give it back, the envoy doesn't drain the battery. So, I'm thinking it's the ignition switch.

Got it. More than likely this is not the switch. It could be but this sounds more like an issue with the interlock that will not release the key until it knows the vehicle is in park.

Here is a guide that will talk about this a little more:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/ignition-switch-wont-turn-stuck

It could be a switch issue, but I would suggest we start with the interlock solenoid in the shifter, and I attached the info below for this.

Please take a look at all this and let me know what questions you have.

Thanks

Okay, everytime I go into the part store, they tell me that it's not able to be found. Could you help me with getting the right part name?

I'm not sure what they are looking up, but this is called a shift interlock solenoid/actuator. It is in the shifter but unfortunately the counter guys at a lot of parts stores are not the most knowledgeable people once you get outside the common parts.

Here is a link to a popular parts site that appears to have them:

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/gmc,2008,envoy,4.2l+l6,1441131,transmission-automatic,shift+interlock+solenoid,16116

Just to be clear, I am pretty confident that this is the issue as this is what tells the vehicle it is in park and if it doesn't then you can't remove the key so if it were me, I would probably replace this.
