ON OUT OF TOWN TRIPS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON. NO OTHER PROBLEM SEEMS TO EXIST. COULD THIS BE A SHORT IN THE LIGHT OR COULD SOMETHING BE REALLY WRONG.

Sounds like u have problem other then the light shorted out. Take it to a auto parts store like autozone and get ur code numbers and bring them to me and we will talk about them.
